            EYE-WITNESS TO THE CONGRESSIONAL HEARINGS

In a letter of October 4, 1992, to our old friend, Helen Thomas,
UPI White House press corps, Allen Drury, noted writer --
"Advise and Consent," among many other notable works -- states:

"I have read with great interest the
Schulers' material on Pearl Harbor, not only
as a citizen but because, as you probably
don't remember, the Pearl Harbor hearing was
my biggest assignment for UP and, in a sense,
the most important thing I have covered in
Washington -- because it revealed to one
naive young reporter that there comes a point
at which everyone, from President to file
clerk, will lie when their own self-interest
and self-preservation are concerned. It was
the greatest lesson in human nature I ever
got, and I'll always be grateful to dear
departed Johnny Cutter that he assigned me
his rookie to be part of his Pearl Harbor
          team.

"The picture of Joseph Grew that emerges
here is exactly how he impressed me listening
to him on the witness stand. And the
vindictiveness with which Frank Schuler and
others who dared fight for the truth were
pursued in the Department only confirms what
I have heard and observed about many others
in similar situations over the years...."

                              Signed, "Al,"
